It has been revealed that South Korean actress Hwang Jung Eum (40), who is suspected of embezzling company funds, used the company's funds to pay for her own credit cards, etc.
According to the Chosun Ilbo on the 11th, Hwang Jung Eum received a total of 4,341,636,068 won (about 4,500,000 won) in funding from Hun Min JEONG Entertainment.
Hwang Jung Eum transferred the entire amount (100% owned by his family) to his personal account.
Hwang Jung Eum used 4,214,324,980 won of the money for cryptocurrency investments and other purposes.
He also used a total of 4,439,796 won in credit card payments to pay off the debt, leading to the allegation of embezzlement. He also paid the interest on the stock-backed loan of 1,042,552 won in installments using the embezzled money.
Initially, Hwang Jung Eum tried to open a cryptocurrency account in the company's name, but it was not easy, so he withdrew funds under the guise of an interim payment and invested them in cryptocurrencies.
The prosecution found that Hwang Jung Eum did not prepare a contract that specified the repayment deadline and interest rate. In addition, Hwang Jung Eum also filed a debt of 800 million yen under a company name in Jeju on July 11, 2022.
He received a loan of 700 million won. He transferred 700 million won from the company's account to his personal account and invested the entire amount in crypto assets. He continued to invest in the same way for 13 years until October of the same year.
On December 31, Jeju District Court handed Hwang Jung Eum over to trial on charges of embezzlement under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.
Hwang Jung Eum admitted to all the charges. He revealed his position through the management office of Y.ONE Entertainment, saying, "Around 2021, I was approached by people around me through cryptocurrency investments.
"I was approached to increase the company's funds. Although the funds were in the company's name, they were earnings from my own activities, so I made an immature decision," he said in his apology.
Hwang Jung Eum also announced on the 17th of last month that he had paid back the full amount of 4.3 billion won.
"I have disposed of my personal assets and paid back the full amount. The financial relationship between Hwang Jung Eum and Hwang Jung Eum has been dissolved. As an individual corporate owner, I lacked knowledge of tax and accounting.
"I deeply regret having caused such controversy," he said. Meanwhile, Hwang Jung Eum's second trial is scheduled to be held on August 21.
