米バイデン政権、イーロン・マスク氏と会った外国人を調査
Biden administration investigates foreigners who met with Elon Musk
The US federal government was tracking foreigners who met with Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla) in 2022 and 2023 while former President Joe Biden was in office.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 10th local time. According to the WSJ, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice have investigated whether foreigners, including Eastern European former members, have influenced Musk.
The investigation did not result in any charges against Musk, but the FBI and others received reports about it.
The investigation began before the Trump administration took office, and it is not clear how long it lasted.
Musk runs five companies that receive highly sensitive government contracts, including SpaceX.
He has unprecedented access to senior government officials, including Musk, who heads the space company SpaceX and has access to top-secret U.S. military information.
Musk is required to report to the government all information that could affect national security, including meetings with foreign officials.
Musk has been in contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022.
Because of such diplomatic contacts, SpaceX's legal team had advised Musk to refrain from applying for enhanced security clearance.
During last year's presidential election, Musk, who supported President Trump's election, was also known for his contact with foreigners.
Concerns were also raised within America PAC, a political fundraising organization founded by Musk, about his foreign network.
Extensive identity verification procedures have reportedly been introduced to prevent foreigners from influencing election activities, including meetings and events.
"The investigation, which began during the Biden administration, is based on Musk's extensive international contacts," the WSJ said.
"This is one example of concerns about the potential risks to national security that the United States may pose."
