During the recent press conference for "Puzzle 9," Son Sukku confessed that she has been a long-time fan of director Yoon Jong-bin.
During a recent interview with Herald POP at a cafe in Seoul, Son Sukku said,
Son Sukku revealed that director Bin became her life mentor. "I decided to appear in the film after reading the synopsis before I even read the script. I'm a big fan of director Yoon Jong-bin, so I'm a big fan of his.
"I was honored that the director asked to meet me," she said. "When I said I wasn't confident about my detective work, the director told me that I should just believe in myself and come.
"I thought the script was quite challenging, but I did it for the director," he said. Director Yoon Jong-bin didn't know Son Sukku very well, but he was persuaded by his wife.
In response, Son Sukku said, "The director first said, 'I didn't know you that well.' Apparently, his wife recommended him."
"Your wife's judgment was spot on," he joked, drawing laughter. "We came up with a lot of ideas and had fun filming, but we also approached it with the feeling that we were going to learn a lot from the perspective of a student.
I learned not just from acting, but from the know-how and attitude of making a work, and all of that kind of general stuff. Now, to me, Director Yoon Jong-bin is a director and a mentor.
"I ask the director a lot about things other than acting and my social life. He always gives me clear answers, so he has become a senior and mentor to me in life," she said.
He also starred alongside actress Kim Da Mi in the film, and the exchanges between the two were fascinating. He said, "The original script was much more rigid. It was more focused on the investigation, and the range of emotions was much smaller.
He used to be a monotone character, but thanks to his relationship with Ina (played by Kim Da Mi), he became a bit of a cool guy. The two of them often said that Hansem was a cool guy.
I think she has become a more honest and transparent person." He then revealed the secret about Kim Da Mi, saying, "Dami is a passionate person. She has a lot of ideas and wants to do a lot of things.
From the beginning, I was clear about the character I wanted to play. Dami was very clear about what she wanted to do, and I didn't really know what to do, so she gave me a lot of ideas, even for the smallest details.
Son Sukku also said, "After Hansam's house became the base camp, I was the one who led the drama. I set Hansam's character as a cool guy in the beginning.
I had prepared the schedule, so it was easy to bring in the unexpectedness. At that time, I also came up with a lot of ideas. After that, I felt more at ease, so when we finished shooting, we would monitor the footage and think about how to make it better.
He asked me to take a look at the video and gave me a lot of advice. Then, the director asked me if I could take it again, and I did.
"I was able to rely on Dami and I to make the film," she said. "Neither Dami nor I like things that are unnatural. We don't like things that are just superficially decorated, and we like things that are simple.
