Fire breaks out on subway line 5, ”starting from the rear carriage” - tense moment in Seoul, South Korea
A man in his 60s set himself on fire on subway line 5 in Seoul, South Korea, and about 400 passengers were forced to evacuate through the tracks in the tunnel amid the smoke.
On the 31st, multiple online communities and SNS were flooded with posts from people using the No. 5 subway line reporting the tense situation.
One passenger on the subway posted a photo of a mask blackened with ash at around 9:15 a.m., saying, "I was sitting in the front car, and someone in the car behind me shouted, 'Fire!'
"The subway made an emergency stop, and black smoke poured in from the rear carriage, and passengers shouted, 'Open the doors! Hurry!'
"Open up!" I was terrified that I might die from suffocation," he said. "The doors opened and I jumped onto the tracks and ran to the next station. I wanted to get out quickly.
"I have to go to work, but I can't get a taxi," he added. Internet users who saw this commented, "Please go to the hospital first," "It must have been really scary," "I hope no one is injured,"
"I hope that he will be able to escape," "I think I would have been unable to stop crying," and other reactions were seen. At around 8:47 a.m. on the same day, the incident occurred between Yeouinaru Station and Mapo Station on Seoul Subway Line 5.
A fire broke out on a train traveling through the city of Seoul. It is believed that a man in his 60s, Mr. A, started the fire using a torch and gasoline on the train. Police arrested the man who fled the scene at Yeouinaru Station.
The fire department deployed 26 vehicles and 99 personnel to put out the fire with fire extinguishers. However, 21 people, including one passenger in his 80s, were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
The fire caused the outbound train service to be temporarily suspended between Yeouido Station and Aogae Station, but the service has now been restored to its original condition.
"The fire itself was quickly put out, but the smoke caused significant damage," fire officials said, adding that they would "strengthen safety inspections of the subway."
