Police conduct special inspections of gun and explosives dealers in preparation for presidential elections in South Korea
With the 21st presidential election just one week away, South Korean police have been conducting special inspections of gun and explosives dealers over the past four weeks.
On the 27th, the National Police Agency announced, "Ahead of the 21st presidential election, we will take measures to prevent safety accidents involving guns and explosives and to reduce social unrest."
"In order to block these attacks in advance, we conducted special inspections of 1,433 gun and explosives dealers and locations across the country where explosives are used."
This special inspection will be carried out for about four weeks from the end of April to ensure the safe use and management of guns and explosives during the election period.
Based on the checklist, the police found a total of 207 deficiencies. In particular, 135 of the 207 deficiencies required corrective measures, 7 required repairs or reinforcement, and 13 required improvements.
Most of the cases were minor, with one incident resulting in a police report and one administrative punishment. Police said they "immediately took steps to improve the situation through on-site corrective measures."
A police official said, "We will carry out a special inspection to comprehensively check the state of gun and explosives management and eliminate risk factors in advance to prevent any further attacks during the presidential election period."
"We hope that this will help prevent related accidents in advance," he said. The police will continue to cooperate with the Firearms and Explosives Safety Technology Association's detailed safety inspections of firearm and explosives dealers, which will begin in June, and will continue to investigate violations.
The police explained that they plan to continue to inspect these matters and also provide guidance and supervision to gun and explosives dealers.
Meanwhile, the police will hold a special meeting on the 28th at 9 pm, taking into consideration the early voting period.
The plan is to ensure safety by prohibiting the release of privately owned firearms from the warehouse from 1 p.m. on June 1 to 5 p.m. on June 4. A police official said, "Firearms and explosives can lead to serious accidents even with minor carelessness, so we are taking measures to ensure safety.
We will continue to conduct thorough inspections and management so that there is not even the slightest gap in overall management."
