Police conducted a search of the psychiatric hospital run by Yang Jae-woong in relation to the death of a hospitalized patient whose hands and feet were tied. The police also found the cell phones and other personal information of the hospital's medical staff, including Yang Jae-woong.
The hospital also seized security cameras and various electronic information necessary for the investigation. It was also confirmed that the cell phones of Yang Jae-eun, the attending physician, and the doctor on duty were also seized.
Police plan to conduct digital forensics and a comprehensive investigation into the charges applied to the medical staff, including professional negligence resulting in death and violations of the Medical Care Act.
On May 27 last year, a woman in her 30s who was admitted to the same hospital for treatment of diet pill addiction died 17 days after being admitted in isolation and restraint.
According to the results of the autopsy by the National Forensic Service, the presumed cause of death at the time was "acute pseudo-intestinal obstruction." The family of the deceased, including Yang Jae-eun, said that they had been subjected to unfair isolation and restraint during their hospital stay.
The lawsuit claims that the deceased died because he was not given proper medical treatment.
The case was assigned to a police station in Bucheon, but the police decided to discontinue the investigation in January this year, citing failure to receive the results of an expert opinion submitted to the Korean Medical Association.
When the investigation was dropped, the family filed a protest and petitioned the National Human Rights Commission in February of this year. The Commission found that the hospital's actions were inappropriate and that medical records had been falsely prepared.
On the 31st of last month, the case was assigned to the Gyeongui Nambu Criminal Task Force and a new investigation was launched.
