Chinese gov says about 60k people died from COVID-19 in medical institutions in past month
The Chinese government recently announced that nearly 60,000 deaths related to the COVID-19 virus occurred in medical institutions in the past month.

On January 14th, Jiao Yahui, Director of the National Health Commission and Health Administration, said at a press conference of the State Council Joint Epidemic Prevention Organization on the 14th that COVID-19-related outbreaks occurred at medical institutions nationwide from December 8th 2022 to January 12th 2023. A total of 59,938 deaths have been recorded.

December 8th 2022 was the day after the Chinese government announced 10 measures to ease the epidemic.

Chief Jiao Yahui said that 5,503 of the dead (about 9.2%) died from respiratory failure due to COVID-19 infection. It added that 54,435 people (about 90.8%) died from a combination of underlying medical conditions and COVID-19 infection. Cases that died at home without a hospital room were not included. The actual number of deaths from COVID-19 is therefore likely to be higher.
