There are signs that the fixed image of South Korea as a divided nation will be replaced by various Korean cultures. In addition, the Japanese "positive" evaluation of South Korea exceeded the negative evaluation for the first time.

According to the results of the "2021 National Image" survey released by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea and the Korean Culture and Information Service on the 24th, foreigners are "producing good quality cultural content" as an issue to improve the image of Korea. 23.3%) was ranked first. This was followed by "overseas public relations to attract tourists" (17.9%) and "global brand development" (16.8%).

By age group, many respondents, mainly in their teens and thirties, regarding "production of high-quality cultural content" seem to reflect the younger generation's contact with Korean wave content and their favorable impressions.

As a general image of South Korea, the positive evaluation was 80.5%, up 2.4 points from the previous year (78.1%). By country, more than 90% of the seven countries, including Vietnam (95%), Turkey (92.2%), the Philippines (92%), and Thailand (90.8%), rated the image of South Korea as “positive”.

In the case of Japan, the positive evaluation (35%) increased by 7.4 points from the previous year (27.6%), exceeding the negative evaluation (26.6%) for the first time since the start of the survey in 2018.

Factors that influence the positive image of Korea are modern culture (22.9%), products/brands (13.2%), economic level (10.2%), cultural heritage (9.5%), national character (8.6%), Social system (7.8%), sports (7.6%), political situation (6.2%), international status (5.3%), etc. were followed by various fields and social aspects.

Interest in South Korea was high in Asia, Latin America, and Middle East/Africa countries, and relatively high in Asia such as Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, India, and Thailand.

This survey was conducted online (survey period: September 1st to 29th, 2021), targeting 12,500 people (16 years old and over) in 24 countries and regions including South Korea.
