Blinken: Armistice in Ukraine not sustainable peace under current circumstances
US Secretary of State Brinken, who is visiting Northern Europe, has expressed his opposition to the ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine at this stage.

According to AFP and other sources, Brinken made a speech at the Helsinki city hall in Finland on the same day on June 2nd local time, stating, "In the future, some countries will push for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine."

Brinken said that while a truce was a rational proposal on the surface, "a truce that would consolidate Putin's territorial occupation and enable him to re-arm and the attack would not be a sustainable peace."

"A prerequisite for meaningful diplomacy and true peace is a stronger Ukraine, capable of deterring and defending against any future aggression," he said.

He added that Putin "has already been defeated strategically", adding that "Russia's power and interests have been severely undermined and the aftermath will continue for years to come."

Brinken welcomed peace talks to end the war.

However, he added the premise that "any state, whether it be Brazil or China, will seek ways to coordinate (negotiations) and lead to peace while adhering to the principles of the United Nations Charter."

Brazil and China have been relatively friendly to Russia, arguing that Western arms support for Ukraine is making matters worse. Secretary Blinken's remarks can be interpreted with this background in mind.
