On the 14th, the Changwon Central Police Station announced that it had referred documents to the prosecution on the 1st of this month against Nam Jae-wook, a Changwon city council member and member of the conservative opposition party People Power, on suspicion of insult.
According to the police, on June 13th, while responding to an interview with a certain media outlet at the Korea Democracy Hall in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon City, Rep. Nam referred to a pro-democracy movement group in the Gyeongsangnam region as "parasitic."
Police have determined that this statement constitutes defamation. According to reports, Rep. Nam has already told representatives of some pro-democracy groups that he has "paid more than necessary for events."
It has also been revealed that he sent a text message stating that the government is wasting its budget by demanding that the government pay more. In response, the pro-democracy movement group has declared that the above statements made by Rep. Nam are defamatory.
He filed a complaint with the police on charges of causing damage, insult, abuse of power, obstruction of the exercise of rights, and obstruction of business. After an investigation, the police applied the charge of insult only to the remarks made by Representative Minami during an interview with the media.
The case was sent to the prosecutor's office.
