President Lee Jae-myung agreed with the opinion that it is necessary to strengthen Chinese character education. He pointed out that the use of words that are far removed from their original meanings has become widespread in everyday expressions recently, and said that the basis for language use should be strengthened.
During the Ministry of Education's work report on the 12th, Kim Eon-jung, director of the Korea Classics Translation Institute, told President Lee about the importance of Chinese character education.
This is a follow-up to President Lee's previous comment that "the word 'adult' (meaning a broad-minded and generous person) is wrong, and even journalists are wrong."
"This is a phenomenon that has arisen as a result of a lack of Chinese character education," Director Kim said, adding that there are cases where students cannot even read the Chinese characters in President Lee's name.
In response, President Lee cited his own Chinese characters as an example, saying, "Some people might write 'Zaimyeong' as 'crime name,'" drawing laughter.
However, President Lee also pointed out that there are practical limitations to forcing the education of Chinese characters through a system.
"It's difficult to even teach them," he said, adding, "If we were to force them to learn kanji as well, it would cause a huge uproar."
On the other hand, "Even if you memorize 1,800 kanji, even if you only memorize 1,000,
"Even if you don't understand the words, you will easily understand the deeper meaning of most of the words," he said, adding that it "helps develop thinking skills."
President Lee reiterated the importance of education in his opening remarks.
President Lee said, "No matter what anyone says, education is a truly important field for the future of Korea," and added, "The national education issue is about designing the country's future for the next 100 years."
He added, "Instead of searching for solutions, we need to develop the ability to ask questions," and added, "If anyone asks a question, AI will be able to provide the answer with considerable skill.
"The question is about individuality and creativity," President Lee said, adding, "I want to foster the ability to be creative and inventive in our people."
The future of Korea depends on whether we can achieve this."
