日本、ベトナム原発プロジェクト撤退…韓国チャンス到来か
Japan withdraws from Vietnam nuclear power plant project... Could this be Korea's chance?
Japan has decided not to participate in Vietnam's nuclear power plant construction project, which some say could have an impact on the energy strategy that the Vietnamese government has been promoting.
On the 8th, Reuters reported that Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Naoki Ito said in an interview that the schedule was too tight and that Japan was withdrawing from the nuclear power project in Vietnam.
Ambassador Ito said, "Japan is not in a position to carry out the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power plant project."
With Japan's withdrawal, South Korean, French and American companies have expressed interest in the project.
Reuters reported that global manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and Apple have production facilities in Vietnam. Large industrial facilities and a growing middle class are creating a demand for electricity.
The country is experiencing frequent power outages, with more frequent extreme weather events such as droughts and typhoons putting pressure on the power supply.
Ninh Thuan 2, along with the similarly sized Ninh Thuan 1, is targeted to be operational in 2035 and will have a capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW) to 3.2 GW.
Vietnam is trying to diversify its power generation, focusing on renewable energy and gas, but several projects have been delayed or hit by regulatory and price uncertainty.
The Ninh Thuan project in particular began in the early 2010s, but construction was suspended in 2016 when the Vietnamese government suspended nuclear power projects due to safety and budgetary concerns.
At the time, Ninh Thuan 1 was to be operated by Russia, and Ninh Thuan 2 by Japan. Vietnam restarted the nuclear power plant project last year and once again requested that both countries carry out the project. Italy
Ambassador Fuji explained that after numerous discussions with Vietnamese authorities, Japan came to the conclusion that it would not be able to meet the completion deadline. Vietnam had originally planned to complete Ninh Thuan 1 in September and Ninh Thuan 2 now.
The contract was supposed to be signed by the end of the month. A contract for Ninh Thuan 1 has also yet to be signed. Reuters reported that Japan is suspending its domestic nuclear operations, which were suspended after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.
Ambassador Ito said Japan is considering additional nuclear power projects, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), in the long term.
He said he is still considering the possibility of pursuing the project in Vietnam.
