Drunk driving suspect arrested at police station during investigation: ”Shocking turn of events” = South Korea
In South Korea, a car belonging to a drunk driving group was being pursued by police and ended up fleeing the scene, driving into a police station parking lot. The driver was then arrested on the spot, a rare incident that occurred.
According to the police on the 26th, the incident occurred at around 11:40 am on September 14th, when they received a report of a car suspected of being drunk driving near Jayu-ro in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province.
An investigation was launched. Police conducted patrols of the surrounding area based on the report, but were initially unable to find the vehicle in question. After that, police officers temporarily moved to Ilsan to maintain their enforcement equipment.
While the vehicle was parked at Higashibu Police Station, a car with the same license plate number as the vehicle suspected of drunk driving that had been reported entered the police station's parking lot.
A police officer who saw this through the side mirror immediately approached Mr. A, a man in his 30s who was in the driver's seat, and administered a breathalyzer test.
As a result, Mr. A's blood alcohol level was found to be 0.120%, which is significantly higher than the standard for license revocation. The police arrested Mr. A on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (Drunk Driving) at 12:00 pm on the same day.
He was arrested on the spot at around 10:00 a.m. On the day of the incident, Mr. A happened to be at the same police station to be questioned as a witness by the Criminal Affairs Division on a separate matter.
According to a police source, Mr. A "drank alcohol with acquaintances in Gwanak-gu, Seoul until the early hours of the morning, then took a nap and got into his car."
The police revealed that they had referred the case to the prosecutor's office on the 20th of last month.
