On the 24th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit announced that Cho, a YouTuber in his 30s known as "Daebo-chan" with 960,000 subscribers, had been arrested on the 21st on suspicion of violating the Basic Act on Telecommunications.
The YouTuber, who is active in Japan, posted a message on the 22nd of last month saying, "Recently, the problem of murder and organ trafficking by criminal Chinese who have entered Korea without a visa has become serious."
He posted a video of Yi Tul. In the video, he was accused of posting false information such as, "37 bodies with only the lower half of the body have been found in Korea. There are 150 cases under closed investigation alone."
Cho has reportedly denied the charges, saying, "I thought the number of crimes committed by Chinese people was increasing and it was dangerous. I posted the video with the intention of making people more vigilant."
The investigation is ongoing, as the spread of false and fabricated information is believed to be fueling public anxiety, causing social unrest, and damaging South Korea's national image.
