On the 19th, the Suwon District Court in South Korea ruled that a violation of the law regarding aggravated punishment for specific crimes had occurred.
The sentence was given to A, who was arrested on suspicion of escape resulting in injury. Suspect A was driving drunk on the road in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, at around 8 a.m. on June 9th of this year.
He was charged with driving a one-ton truck while in a state of emergency and hitting a high school student, Mr. B (16 years old), who was standing on the sidewalk in front of a crosswalk on his way to school, and fleeing the scene.
Mr. B was seriously injured in the head and other parts of his body and was taken to the hospital. He was unconscious for a while, but recovered and is currently in good health.
He is reportedly currently undergoing rehabilitation treatment. Police arrested A, who fled the scene, at his home. Recently, foreign tourists visiting Korea have been hit by drunk driving vehicles, claiming their lives one after another.
On the 2nd of this month, a Japanese tourist mother and child were hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street at Dongdaemun in Seoul, and the mother died.
On the 25th of last month, a drunk driving vehicle hit a pedestrian crossing the street in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, killing a Canadian man and leaving his daughter seriously injured.
According to the Korea Road Transport Authority's Traffic Accident Analysis System (TASS), there were 11,037 traffic accidents caused by drunk driving last year, resulting in 138 deaths and 1,000 injuries.
7,110 people were injured.
