South Korea's cement industry is adopting AI to help reduce workplace accidents

Hanil Cement is building a smart factory using AI (artificial intelligence) at its ready-mixed concrete plant in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province.
The company has introduced an AI-based safety management system to its ready-mix concrete plant in Incheon. Until now, the cement industry has seen a number of accidents, including being pinched while cleaning conveyors, slipping and falling while installing equipment, and traffic accidents.
According to the South Korean government's Ministry of Employment and Labor, 200 people were recognized as victims of industrial accidents in the cement industry in 2022.
The system introduced by Sampyo Industries combines real-time video analysis technology with LLM (Large Scale Language Model) to automatically analyze dangerous elements on-site.
Hanil Cement has a system that sounds an alarm if a worker engages in unnecessary behavior. The company also plans to introduce AI technology to its cement plants in the future.
A cement industry insider said, "By introducing an automated manufacturing system using AI, the factory's automation rate and control accuracy will increase to about 95%.
This will reduce carbon emissions during the production process, thereby enhancing environmental friendliness and productivity at the same time."
