South Korean civic group accuses President Lee's aide of ”abuse of power by withholding age and academic background”
Kim Hyun-ji, head of the first presidential office and considered South Korean President Lee Jae-myung's closest aide, has been accused by a civic group and filed a complaint with the police.
On the 6th, the civic group "Common People's Welfare Committee" accused Kim of abuse of power, coercion, obstruction of business, and misconduct in business.
The People's Committee announced that it had filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on charges of embezzlement, breach of trust, etc. The committee said that Kim was a secretary for general affairs (a first-class civil servant at the time) who was in charge of the budget, facility management, personnel administration, etc. of the Presidential Office.
Despite the fact that the government had not disclosed even basic information such as age, educational background, career history, and hometown, citing reasons for protecting personal information, the government has criticized this as an "abuse of power that mocks the public."
The report also pointed out that President Lee's direct phone call to Kang Seong-woo, candidate for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, to convey his intention that he should "withdraw his candidacy" constituted abuse of power and coercion.
He added, "As Secretary for General Affairs, Kim has a responsibility to attend and explain the audit of the National Assembly Steering Committee, but he refused to do so and was appointed Director of the First Annex, an unusual personnel change, just before the audit.
"Kim's transfer to the current position is a deception that insults the people, including the National Assembly," he said. Kim served as secretary for general affairs, in charge of personnel and finances, after the current administration was launched, and was transferred to his current position in a reorganization on the 29th of last month.
While the presidential office explained that this was a planned personnel change, the opposition People Power Party claimed that this transfer was an attempt to avoid attending the National Assembly and that Kim's key personal information was being withheld.
We strongly demand that the information be made public.
