Hackers target Constitutional Court... Over 1.1 million attempted terrorist attacks in nine years = South Korea
It has been revealed that the Constitutional Court has been subjected to over 1.1 million cyberattacks over the past nine years.
According to documents submitted to the lawmaker by the Constitutional Court, a total of 1,167,000 cases of 'cyber terrorism' were counted as coming under the jurisdiction of the Constitutional Court from 2017 to August this year.
Cyber terrorism cases have steadily increased every year, from 85,000 in 2017 to 187,000 last year. This year, more than 80,000 cases have already been uncovered by August.
However, because the attack was successfully detected and blocked before it actually occurred, no cases of damage caused by this have yet been reported.
Cyber terrorism is carried out through various routes, such as spreading malicious code and sending phishing emails.
This could lead to damage such as hacking, leaks of personal information, and service paralysis. In fact, from 2021 to 2023, a North Korean hacker organization hacked the court's computer network for a long period of time.
In one case, a hacker hacked a company and stole a large amount of internal documents. Even after the incident, it was not clear how the hacker had infiltrated the company or what documents had been leaked, and there were concerns about secondary damage, such as the misuse of personal information.
Concerns about the damage caused by this have grown. In order to block such threats in advance, the Constitutional Court has established an automatic blocking system and is running a specialized department in charge of computer network security.
In 2025, when former President Yoon Seok-yeol was impeached, a total of nine cases of online terrorism and threats were confirmed, including a teaser for the murder of a judge and a teaser for the arson of the Constitutional Court.
The threat has gone beyond simple cyber attacks to include physical threats directly targeting constitutional institutions. Aki said, "Cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated. We need to be more vigilant in advance and systematically strengthen security.
We must work on this,” he emphasized.
