Fujiwara Mii, a Japanese female YouTuber with 230,000 subscribers, was born in March last year.
The shocking incident that occurred in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, is once again attracting attention among internet users in South Korea.
On March 1st of last year, Mii posted a video on her YouTube channel titled "The fate of a woman who was denied accommodation."
According to the video, Mii arrived in Sokcho after a six-hour journey from Seoul Express Bus Terminal. However, during the trip, she received a message from the hotel she had booked saying, "The reservation has been canceled.
In return, the accommodation facility offered a 10,000 won discount coupon.
She was already on her way to Sokcho and frantically used the app to find a place to stay.
Upon checking, I found that the hotel I had booked still had rooms available, but the price had jumped to 370,000 won, about five times higher than the original price of 70,000 won.
Mii said, "It was a holiday, so I think they were trying to turn down people who had booked for 70,000 won like me and accept people at a higher price. 370,000 won per night is not worth it.
"It's too long. I'm disappointed that my reservation was rejected," she said. In the end, Mii had no choice but to endure the cold and look for accommodation near the terminal. She tried several motels, guesthouses, and hotels.
However, as expected, the hotel was fully booked. She blamed herself for not checking Korean holidays in advance, but added, "I canceled the reservation just four hours after booking, with a 'reservation completion error'.
"I'm angry," she said. Finally, Mii booked the last bus to Seoul and returned to Seoul after sightseeing in Sokcho. In Abai Village, famous as the filming location for the TV series "Autumn in My Heart,"
She said she enjoyed squid sundae and red snow crab ramen. "This trip was the worst. I wanted to let people know that these kinds of problems can happen at any time," she said.
"We will not disclose the names of hotels that unilaterally canceled reservations," the company said. Meanwhile, major tourist destinations in South Korea have seen hotel prices soar during the holiday season and long weekends, sparking controversy over rip-offs.
According to documents submitted by the Korea Consumer Agency to the office of Rep. Jin Jeong-oh in July this year, over the past five years, there have been 100 complaints of consumers regarding extortionate prices at tourist spots across the country.
The total number of reports reached 155. According to the Korea Tourism Organization's "2024 Tourism Discomfort Report Comprehensive Analysis Report," a total of 1,543 reports were received through the Tourism Discomfort Report Center last year, which was 1,543 more than the previous year.
This was a 71.1% increase from the previous year (902 cases). Of these, 1,433 cases were reported by foreign tourists, accounting for 92.9% of the total.
