Even the doctors were surprised... The oldest woman to give birth to twins at age 58, what's the secret? (South Korea)
The story of Park Mi-sun (71), who gave birth to twins at the age of 58 and became Korea's oldest mother, has become a hot topic in Korea.
On the TV program "It's Okay to Not Be Martian" (STORY), Park, who successfully conceived for the first time 12 years after going through menopause, appeared and talked about pregnancy at an advanced age.
Park, who got married in 1985, was unable to have children for a long time and underwent various treatments. Park said, "I thought that I would be able to have children immediately after getting married, but
"I couldn't have a baby. I went to the hospital and they told me that my fallopian tubes were blocked," she said. For the next 10 years, she tried everything, including in vitro fertilization, but she couldn't have a child.
She went through menopause at age 45. But 12 years later, something miraculous happened: her period started again. Park immediately emailed a renowned infertility specialist, asking for help.
However, the obstetrician-gynecologist responded skeptically. Ms. Park said, "I asked to be examined to see if there were any abnormalities in my function, but even though I begged in tears, the obstetrician-gynecologist refused all of my requests."
The medical community believes that women's fertility gradually declines from around the age of 35, and that in their mid-to-late 40s, the number and quality of ovarian follicles rapidly declines, significantly lowering the chances of conception.
The chances of conception are estimated at about 5%. After being denied IVF, Park decided to try again by creating a healthy body.
"I was 56 years old, but if I could make my physical age 12 years younger, I would be 44, so I thought it was possible," he said. Park went to a traditional Chinese medicine clinic and stopped eating flour, tempura, and coffee, and started eating a vegetable-based diet.
She changed her habits and continued exercising steadily for two years. Upon returning to the obstetrician-gynecologist, she was diagnosed with a physical age of 38, allowing her to try IVF. She was determined to be nearly 20 years younger than her actual age.
The first time she tried IVF, she was successful in conceiving twins, a boy and a girl. In September 2012, the twins were born healthy, weighing 2.23 kg and 2.63 kg respectively. At 58 years old and approaching the age of 60,
Ms. Park, who became a mother in 2013, said, "I wanted to hear the word 'mother' at least once. I sometimes felt sad when I saw a stroller, but my wish, which I had held in my heart for 58 years, has come true."
He continued, "There are people in their 40s who think, 'I'm getting old, so I should give up,' but I want to tell them, 'If you put your mind to it, you can do it.'"
At the time, Park made the news by breaking the record for the oldest woman to give birth in South Korea.
Professor Kim Am's team from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology said, "Park has shown incredible passion through dietary management and exercise. This birth is a victory for humanity and something we should all celebrate."
