In South Korea, a military officer, A (39), who killed a female military serviceman with whom he had a common-law marriage, then mutilated her body and dumped it in a river, was sentenced to life imprisonment on appeal.
The court said, "Although defendant A submitted letters of apology almost every day, his crimes are serious and premeditated," and "he must be isolated from society."
On the 27th, the Seoul High Court dismissed Defendant A's appeal at the sentencing hearing for charges including murder, upholding the original ruling of the previous court that sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The court ruled, "The defendant went to the extreme of brutally murdering the victim in order to protect his hard-earned social status and family. This crime has completely destroyed the defendant's life.
"However, the nature and method of the crime were extremely cruel, and it was impossible to find even the most basic respect for human beings, and it undermined the fundamental values of respect for life and respect for the dead," he continued.
The fact that he has committed the crime is so grave that there is no hope of leniency."
