US President Trump: ”South Korea is obsessed with comfort women... Japan wants to move forward” - South Korean media

At the US-South Korea summit held on the 25th (local time), US President Trump said, "South Korea is still thinking about the comfort women issue, and I have had some difficulty in encouraging the improvement of relations between our two countries (Japan and South Korea)."

"I think Japan is a great country," he said, emphasizing that "Japan and South Korea have things in common. They want to resolve the North Korean issue," and also showing his view as an arbitrator in historical issues between Japan and South Korea.
President Trump continued, "Japan wants to improve relations, but South Korea is not proactive," and questioned Japan's passive attitude toward resolving the comfort women issue.
President Lee mentioned that he visited Japan before his visit to the US and held a summit meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba, saying, "We made efforts to resolve the difficult issues we are facing."
President Trump also mentioned China in relation to Korean history. He said, "There are two Koreas, but at one time there was a very large and powerful nation.
"And that country went to war with China," he said. Trump sparked controversy after meeting with President Xi Jinping in Florida in 2017 by saying, "Apparently, South Korea was actually part of China."
However, no comments were made on this matter during the public meeting that day. Also, when bringing up hot topics such as Japan-Korea relations and historical issues, he showed caution by prefaced his remarks with, "I may be wrong."
On that day, about three hours before the summit, President Trump suddenly posted on social media, "It appears that a purge or revolution has taken place in South Korea," and "We cannot do business in such a place."
"The situation calmed down when President Trump said during the meeting, 'I believe it was a misunderstanding.'"
