Director Park Chan-wook expelled from Writers Guild of America for violating strike rules
Director Park Chan-wook has been expelled from the Writers Guild of America. According to the American media outlet Variety on the 8th (local time), the Writers Guild of America (WGA) recently expelled Park Chan-wook.
Director Park and Don McKellar were expelled. Director Park and Don McKellar co-wrote the HBO series "Sympathizers" during the 2023 WGA strike, and were subject to the strike rules.
"Sympathizer" is based on the novel of the same name by Vietnamese-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen.
The film stars Hoa Xuande, Robert Downey Jr., and Sandra Oh.
The WGA announced that it will end streaming from May to September 2023 in response to the rise of AI (artificial intelligence) scripts and to encourage better treatment and employment stability in line with the expansion of the global streaming market.
During this process, the WGA disciplined seven writers for violating strike rules. Four of them appealed their expulsions, but director Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar did not.
Director Park Chan-wook gained fame not only in Korea but also overseas with films such as "Oldboy" (2003) and "The Handmaiden" (2016).
He is scheduled to meet the public in September with his next film, "It Can't Be Helped."
