The Ministry of Health and Welfare's Training Environment Evaluation Committee announced on the 8th that it will begin recruiting interns and residents for the second half of the year.
The number of applicants confirmed by each hospital was 3,006 interns, 3,207 first-year residents, and 7,285 advanced-year residents (2nd to 4th years), totaling 13,498.
Currently, there are a total of 2,532 medical residents undergoing training nationwide (18.7% of the number before the conflict between the medical community and the government), and the number of people to be filled in the second half of this year's recruitment will be more than five times that number.
Each training hospital will post recruitment notices until the 11th, and then proceed with recruitment according to their own schedules until the 29th. Selected residents will begin their training on September 1st.
The current recruitment will allow for the 'post-registration quota' of residents who have resigned, as decided the previous day by a training council made up of the government, resident associations, and training hospitals.
Even if the positions from which residents resigned in February last year have already been filled by residents who began training last year and this year, if the residents who resigned wish to return, they will be able to select more than the quota.
New residents can only be admitted if there are vacant positions left after the resigning residents return. It is unclear how many of the resigning residents will choose to return.
The strict "single rank" system that was maintained until the additional recruitment in the first half of the year has effectively collapsed, so it is expected that a considerable number of medical residents who wish to resume their training will return, but the approximately 800 who enlisted this year
In addition, some have given up on their training, so not all of the residents who have resigned are returning. An official at a large training hospital in Seoul said, "Currently, 12 to 15 percent of residents are returning by department.
However, since it is unlikely that the remaining 85% will all return this time, there will not be many cases where capacity is exceeded."
