A North Korean resident defected to South Korea through neutral waters of the Han River on July 31.

It has been belatedly revealed that a North Korean resident defected by sea last month. This follows the defection of a North Korean resident across the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on the midwestern front on the 3rd of last month.
This is the second case of this kind to be made public under the Lee Jae-myung administration. A South Korean military official said on the 7th, "The South Korean military conducted surveillance in the neutral waters of the Han River on the night of the 30th of last month.
"The military then tracked and monitored the individual through border operations that lasted approximately 10 hours, and rescued him using a littoral combat craft at around 4 a.m. on the 31st," the statement said.
This incident was reported near Kyodong Island in Ganghwa County, Incheon. Previously, the North Korean government had taken advantage of the receding waters of the Han River estuary, revealing mudflats in the neutral waters.
There was a case of a person "fleeing on foot." The rescue point was 11 meters deep, but the water level was rising. This information was shared with the United Nations Command.
At the time of the operation, North Korean residents waved their hands to request rescue, and the South Korean formation leader responded, "This is the Republic of Korea Navy. Do you intend to defect?"
The North Korean resident was handed over to the relevant authorities and is currently under investigation. The South Korean military plans to award rewards to the personnel and units who contributed to this operation.
