Cocaine worth 300 billion won seized at Busan port, ”en route to China” - South Korea
In May of this year, 600 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately 300 billion won (approximately 30 billion yen) was seized from a container ship from Central and South America that arrived at the new port of Busan, South Korea.
The authorities subsequently confirmed that there was no connection to South Korea and concluded the investigation. The Busan District Prosecutors' Office and Busan Customs announced this in a conference room at the Busan District Prosecutors' Office on the 6th.
On May 9, Busan Customs received information about a risky container from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and, after analyzing the port arrival information, decided to depart the container, which was scheduled to depart the next day.
The next day, a non-contact inspection using a vehicle-type X-ray machine revealed an abnormal shadow, and when the container was opened, it was discovered that the container contained one kilogram of waterproof packaging in white bags.
600 locks were found. Analysis of the ingredients confirmed that it was cocaine. The authorities then investigated the captain and all 27 crew members of the vessel, and after searching the entire vessel, South Korea
There was no link to the Greek or Filipino crew members. Of the 137 fingerprints taken from the container and in the vicinity of the cocaine, only one from Korea was found.
The basis for this is that there were no matches with domestic fingerprint information, and no unusual features were found on the crew members' cell phones.
The cocaine was supposed to have been loaded in Central or South America and recovered in a third country, but this has not been confirmed.
It is believed that the vessel was transported to Busan New Port without being recovered for some reason. The vessel arrived in Busan from Central and South America via Japan and other countries, with its final destination being China.
Based on these findings, the authorities have concluded their investigation and provided the relevant materials to the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration).
The cocaine is scheduled to be promptly destroyed. Overseas investigative agencies, including those in the United States, are pursuing the international drug cartels (South American cartels) that attempted to distribute the cocaine.
An official from the authorities said, "Recently, large quantities of cocaine have been seized one after another at Busan New Port, smuggled through trading ships originating from Central and South America.
"We will continue to maintain the close cooperative relationship we have built with international drug enforcement agencies, including the DEA, and strive to better protect the public from drug crimes," he said.
