Conflict between Thailand and Cambodia escalates; South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs raises travel warning
The South Korean government raised its travel warning for the border area between Thailand and Cambodia again on the 27th in response to the dispute between the two countries.
The conflict has spread to Pursat Province in southwestern Cambodia, and the concentration of army and navy forces in the border area is raising the possibility of further expansion. As a result, five provinces along the Cambodian border with Thailand are being ordered to carry out military drills.
The special travel warning for Cambodia is in the provinces of Oudtaw Meanchey, Preah Vihear, and Banteay Meanchey.
, Pailin, Battambang, Pursat and Koh Kong provinces. A Level 1 "travel warning" was issued for the rest of Cambodia.
Prior to this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a special travel warning for Uddhav Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces on the 25th of this month.
The travel warning for the provinces of Meanchey, Pailin, Battambang, Pursat and Koh Kong was previously at Level 2 (restrict travel), but was raised to a special travel warning on this day.
The Special Travel Advisory is a measure equivalent to a travel warning level of 2 (restrict travel) or higher, or level 3 (departure recommendation) or lower, which is equivalent to a 2.5-level measure.
The travel warning will be issued on the 1st of each month and will be valid for up to 90 days from the date of issue. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Koreans who are planning to visit Cambodian border areas where special travel warnings have been issued to cancel or postpone their trips.
"We ask all Thai nationals currently in the area to move to safer areas," the ministry said.
The three provinces of Surin, Buriram, Sisaket, and Trat were upgraded to a special travel warning as of 5 p.m. on the 27th. This is in addition to the provinces of Surin, Buriram, and Sisaket, which were already under special travel warnings.
The border checkpoints have been added to those in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Chiang Saen and Mae Sai. Meanwhile, armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has been ongoing since the 24th of this month.
So far, 33 civilians and soldiers from both countries have been killed, and over 130 have been injured. More than 200,000 people are said to have fled the country.
