The Korea Economic Association conducted a survey on domestic and international travel preferences targeting men and women aged 18 and over. The results showed that young people tend to prefer international travel, while those in their 50s and 60s prefer domestic travel.
Among those in their 20s and younger, 48.3% preferred overseas travel and 28.6% preferred domestic travel, while among those in their 50s, the figures were 34.9% for the former and 42.7% for the latter.
Reasons for preferring domestic travel include "less time and expense" (32.8%) and "no language or cultural differences" (9.4%). On the other hand, reasons for preferring overseas travel include "
Reasons given included "it's a unique experience" (39.1%) and "it offers better value for money than domestic travel" (14.8%).
The average satisfaction rating for domestic travel was 8.3 out of 10. This was lower than the 8.7 rating for overseas travel.
The most common reasons given were "prices are high in tourist destinations" (45.1%) and "tourist destinations are concentrated in a few areas, such as Seoul and Jeju" (9.0%).
When asked about the policies necessary to stimulate domestic travel, the most common answer was "strengthening management through a system to prevent high prices in tourist destinations" (35.6%).
The association's head of economy and industry Lee Sang Ho said, "The association will continue various tourism promotion activities, including the 'K-Vacation Campaign.'"
