Russia's Medvedev: ”Preemptive strikes against the West if necessary”
Russia's Deputy Chairman of the National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, urged Western countries to "launch a preemptive attack if necessary."
In an interview with the Russian state news agency TASS on the 17th (local time), Deputy Chairman Medvedev said, "The Western countries are in effect Russia.
"They are waging an all-out war against us," he said, adding, "We must respond with all our might, even launching a preemptive attack if necessary."
"80 years ago, on July 17, 1945, the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom launched the Second World War," said Medvedev, who served as Russian president from 2008 to 2012.
The Potsdam Conference was held to settle the aftermath of the world war, but the West is violating the decisions made at that time," he said.
Regarding this, a Kremlin spokesman said, "I am not a Russian.
"As I am a spokesperson for President Dmitry Putin, I will not comment in detail on Deputy Chairman Medvedev's remarks," he said, refusing to make an official comment.
However, he added, "Deputy Chairman Medvedev has a wealth of experience, has served as Russian president, and now holds a very responsible position."
"He was expressing his opinion, of course," he said. "The environment that is currently building in Europe, the environment that we are facing, is very unconstructive, confrontational and militarized."
"Such concerns are entirely legitimate," he added.
