Local governments in South Korea take steps to combat the heatwave, offering free hotel use and water

Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, is running a "Safe Accommodation for the Elderly" service in cooperation with hotels in the district. When the heat wave warning was issued, the High Seoul Youth Hostel and other hotels
The plan is to offer free lodging at three hotels, including the one listed above, for one person per room, from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am the following day.
Hotels are available for use in areas where there is no air conditioning or where the air conditioner is broken.
The target group will be people aged 65 or older receiving welfare benefits who are at risk of developing moderate symptoms, and those who are considered to have the next lowest standard of living. Meanwhile, Nowon-gu will be offering its "Healing Refrigerator" service for a longer period than usual.
The ward has also been implementing this initiative early on. Refrigerators have been installed in seven riverside locations, eight walking trails, and three newly added locations, including a park, to provide cold water to residents.
In addition, Seongdong-gu has also started the "Seongdong Water Storehouse" to provide cold water to residents engaged in outdoor activities.
Meanwhile, Guro-gu has changed the working hours of seasonal workers who work in parks and green spaces. Outdoor activities during the hot and humid hours are to be kept to a minimum, and working hours are to be adjusted accordingly.
They are working to improve efficiency and ensure safety. A local government official said, "As extreme heat is getting longer every year due to climate change, we will implement measures to ensure that everyone can spend the summer safely."
