President Lee made the remarks while presiding over the first National Security Council meeting since taking office that afternoon, and a presidential spokesman conveyed the remarks at a press conference.
President Lee said, "If our national security is shaken, the economy will collapse and our daily lives will not be safe," and asked, "I ask you to use your wisdom to ensure that the lives of the people are safe."
In particular, President Lee stated, "National security is always more about 'prevention' than 'reacting after the fact.'" He added, "In light of the rapid changes in the international order and the domestic political situation,
"We must take into consideration a comprehensive range of factors, including the North Korean variable, which reflects the unique characteristics of the Korean Peninsula," he said.
"We must continue to strive for peace, practicality, and the safety of our people."
