The use of a map with the word "Japan" written on it drew criticism and led to an apology. Shuka World used this incident as a catalyst to launch a website to support the descendants of independence activists.
On the 7th, Shuka World announced on their YouTube community that they would donate 30 million won (approximately 3.3 million yen) to the cause of the earthquake in Japan.
"When I was using the map, a map with the words 'Sea of Japan' was displayed," he said, posting an apology. "It was a mistake that occurred because I was using Japanese documents, and it is 100% my fault.
"It was a mistake on our part," he said, explaining, "Despite having checked the map beforehand, the accident occurred when the map was replaced with one that was easier to see visually just before it was broadcast."
He continued, "This mistake is unacceptable to me as well, and I sincerely apologize for causing concern to many people."
"The Sea of Japan is the East Sea, and Liancourt Rocks (called Takeshima in Japan) is of course our territory," he emphasized. Shuka World has taken this incident as an opportunity to hold a "Seoul Independence Movement" event organized by the Korean Red Cross.
Regarding the criticism that the comments of a viewer who pointed out the map with the name "Sea of Japan" written on it in the previous day's broadcast were blocked, he said, "I am in charge of chat management.
"The administrator in charge took measures to ban chat in order to calm the situation down," he explained, "I wasn't looking at the chat during STREAM, so I didn't notice."
He added, "It is wrong to ban chats that make valid points, and this is also my responsibility. I am not criticizing or slandering anyone, but pointing out legitimate material."
We will be careful not to ban the practice in the future," the company said in a further apology.
