South Korean Presidential Office: ”China and South Korea are in communication” regarding ”Victory Day invitation” from China
On the 2nd, the South Korean presidential office said, "We are currently communicating on issues related to South Korea and China" regarding the Chinese side's invitation to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung for the Victory Day on September 3.
He went on to ask for understanding that it is difficult to reveal the specific details of what is being communicated through diplomatic channels.
It has been reported that the Chinese government has asked President Lee through diplomatic channels to participate in the 80th anniversary of Victory Day celebrations.
The 80th anniversary of the Victory Day will be celebrated on September 3rd at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. As this marks the 80th anniversary of the Victory Day, China will hold a large-scale celebration to promote the Victory Day and South Korea.
It is expected that the government will invite leaders of Western countries as well. However, it has not yet been decided whether President Lee will actually attend. President Lee will talk about past cases and foreign policy issues such as China-Korea relations and U.S.-China relations.
The decision is expected to be made after taking into consideration the situation. Meanwhile, the 70th anniversary of the Victory Day celebrations in 2015 was notable for being the only event to be attended by South Korean President Park Geun-hye from the free camp.
At the time, Western leaders declined invitations to the event, raising concerns that it could have a negative impact on the US-South Korea alliance.
