Gwangjin district to fully implement semi-underground flood prediction system using AI (South Korea)
The Gwangjin district of Seoul, South Korea, has begun a trial run of a "Flood Safety Management System" to prevent flood damage to semi-underground homes in preparation for heavy rains in the summer.

The demonstration area is near the Nakaya storm water pumping station in the area around Kingoran-ro in Nakaya No. 1, which is located in a low-lying area. Here, I was installed in 30 manholes along the sewer pipe.
IoT water level sensors are installed. The real-time data collected by the sensors is analyzed by AI, and the results are linked to the district office's monitoring system so that they can be checked immediately.
This will enable flood predictions in 0, 20, and 30 minute increments, allowing the ward to take proactive measures. In addition, the Korean communication app "KakaoTalk" will be available for residents.
A two-way notification service using the Internet will also be provided. Information will be sent to residents in real time according to the four danger levels: "safe," "caution," "alert," and "serious," and the "golden days" for evacuation will be announced.
The aim is to ensure "on-time operation." The "Flood Safety Management System" is equipped with automatic diagnosis and remote inspection functions, and is normally used to detect abnormalities in sewer pipes through the analysis of water level data.
The ward will use the system intensively during the rainy season until August, and will continue testing with the goal of achieving a forecasting accuracy of 95%. If its effectiveness is confirmed, it will be applied to other areas in the future.
Gwangjin-gu Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, "We will operate this flood prediction system in line with the times when we need to protect lives by taking proactive measures based on data.
"We want to be thoroughly prepared so that we can protect our communities," he said, indicating his intention to continue leading a disaster management system that utilizes IT technology in order to "create a safe environment that responds to climate change."
