A spokesman for the South Korean presidential office said at a press conference on the same day, "(Nagashima) is attending a conference to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan.
The spokesperson added, "The two sides discussed ways to develop bilateral relations and agreed to continue to communicate closely in the future."
Meanwhile, President Lee Jae Myung departed for Canada to attend the G7 Summit.
Attention is focused on whether President Lee will hold a summit meeting with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during the summit.
A South Korean presidential office official said on the previous day (15th) that "the matter is currently being adjusted," and "the situation is subject to change at this time, so we will refrain from making any definitive comments."
He continued, "The recent phone conversation between Korea and Japan was very good. This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 80th anniversary of liberation (from Japanese colonial rule). I hope to build a good relationship.
"We are in agreement that we will continue to work together to achieve this goal," he said, adding, "(If a date for the meeting is decided) I hope that the talks will proceed as an extension of the telephone conversation."
