A man in his 30s who was tried for his involvement in the "Seoul Western District Court riot" during the review of an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Seok-yeol in January this year was sentenced to prison in the first trial.
According to the legal community on the 12th, Chief Judge Heo Jun-seo of the Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court sentenced defendant Cho (30), who was arrested and indicted on charges of special common property damage and special building trespass, to two years and six months in prison.
Among the participants in the Western District Court brawl, nine have received first-instance sentences to date, and Cho received the heaviest sentence so far.
On January 19, immediately after the issuance of an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Seok-yeol, Cho is accused of entering the entrance area on the first floor of the Western District Court and entering the courtroom outside the courthouse walls.
He was on trial for allegedly throwing a brick at a nearby building and breaking a window in the courtroom with a bag containing a fire extinguisher.
Of course, it is possible that a criminal offense may be committed, but it is unacceptable to attack a court in an illegal manner simply because the trial process or outcome is different from one's own opinion. The defendant's actions are highly reprehensible and he/she is not culpable.
He added that he had taken into consideration the fact that Cho is remorseful, has no criminal record, and is in poor health due to his long period of detention, but added that "a prison sentence is unavoidable and heavy."
There is no option but to impose a sentence," he added.
