”Tether USDT price tags” appear in Bolivian duty-free shops… Will Tether establish its position as a key currency?
Stablecoins are reportedly emerging as an unofficial base currency in Bolivia, which is experiencing a serious economic crisis.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino
On the 7th, Ardoino posted a photo of a price list displayed in Tether’s stablecoin USDT at a duty-free shop at the Bolivian airport.
In the photo in the post, the prices of sunglasses, sweets, and other products in a Bolivian duty-free shop were displayed in USDT, and one of the instructions read, "Our products are sold in the stable cryptocurrency Tether (
The price is set in USDT (United States Dollars), based on the benchmark exchange rate announced daily by the Bolivian Central Bank, which uses the Binance exchange rate as a reference."
The duty-free shop in question allows payment in either the local currency, Bolivianos, or US dollars, but it was found that the actual price standard is determined by USDT.
The photo shows Duty Fly, a duty-free shop in the airport. To date, neither Tether nor Duty Fly have released an official statement on the related reports.
It is still unclear how much penetration there has been, but USDT's presence appears to be gradually expanding. Meanwhile, in October 2024, Banco Visa, a major local bank, announced that USDT would be accepted as a cryptocurrency.
Bisa has introduced a USDT trustee service, allowing clients to buy, sell and transfer the asset directly through banks.
