North Korean leader Kim Jong Eun met with Russian national security chief Sergei Shoigu and exchanged views on the international situation.
According to the Korean Central News Agency on the 5th, Chairman Kim met with Secretary Shoigu the previous day at the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea in Pyongyang.
During the meeting, Shoigu conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Chairman Kim. Chairman Kim expressed his gratitude and returned the greetings to President Putin.
"The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will continue to unconditionally support Russia's position and foreign policy on all major international political issues, including the Ukraine issue, and will continue to cooperate with the North Korean government," Kim said.
"We will responsibly abide by the provisions of the treaty between North Korea and Russia," he said. "We will ensure that Russia continues to win in the just cause of safeguarding its national sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests."
The North Korean government said it hopes and believes it will be beneficial to further strengthen the special and robust comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
"We discussed a series of important issues and various issues of mutual cooperation to safeguard our common core interests," the statement said.
The statement added that the two sides agreed to fully align their relations with the national interests and welfare of their peoples and to contribute to the realization of true international justice.
"The leadership of both countries is determined to continue to actively expand and develop our bilateral relationship into a strong, comprehensive strategic partnership based on mutual trust and cooperation," the statement said.
"We are grateful to Russia for taking part in the Kursk liberation operation and for providing us with a valuable part of our territory," Shoigu said.
He also conveyed Russia's gratitude to the "outstanding sons of the Korean people who defended the Korean peninsula as if it were their own country." According to the Russian National Security Council, the two also discussed prospects for the reconstruction of the Kursk region.
They also discussed concrete measures to commemorate the "historic action" of the North Korean military, which participated in the liberation of Kursk. The meeting coincided with the inauguration of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
