With China refusing to resume exports of rare earths, tensions between the United States and China appear to be escalating again.
"They are the ones who are in the wrong," Trump told reporters at the White House that day.
"It violated an important part of the agreement that we made," he said, adding, "But I will be speaking to President Xi and hopefully we can resolve that issue."
President Trump posted on his social media this morning, criticizing China, but he also mentioned the agreement the two countries signed in Switzerland earlier this month.
The two countries agreed to lift each other's retaliatory tariffs and continue trade talks, but did not specify which provisions had been violated.
Trump's comments come amid growing uncertainty over tariff policy. Earlier this week, a federal court ruled that
The Supreme Court ruled to suspend most of the tariffs, and the appeals court has temporarily stayed the ruling. If the ruling is ultimately upheld by the advanced court, Trump's tariffs will be invalidated.
In the midst of all this, even the US-China trade talks are showing signs of stalling, causing market turmoil once again. The US side is concerned that China will not actively lift the export ban on critical minerals even after the Swiss agreement.
In an interview with CNBC, U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer said, "We are closely monitoring China's implementation, and at this point,
"The situation is close to noncompliance," he said, pointing out that compliance is particularly insufficient regarding the supply of strategic resources such as rare earths.
"We are not seeing any flow of important minerals that China was supposed to supply," Gurria said. "China is not seeing any flow of rare earths, magnets, etc.
"These actions have slowed or cut off the supply of strategic materials to China," he added. The Chinese government has not issued a clear stance on rare earth export restrictions since the Swiss agreement.
According to the report, Chinese exporters have been left confused this month after not receiving clear instructions from the government on whether they can sell to American buyers.
