Candidate Kim Moon-soo: ”I was once an 'anti-American'”... ”There is no Korea without the United States”
On the 19th, Kim Moon-soo, the candidate of the ruling People Power Party, said, "If I win the presidential election, I will visit the United States in June and hold an early summit meeting with President Donald Trump."
Candidate Mu said, "I was once anti-American," and added, "I now believe that there is no Korea without the United States," stressing the importance of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
On the same day, Kim attended a meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea held in Seoul and said, "If I become president, I will pursue the interests of Korea."
"We will make this our top priority, and will actively explore new economic opportunities for the two countries to develop together, such as cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, which the US is interested in, to usher in an era of co-prosperity for the ROK and the US," he said.
"If the ROK-U.S. alliance is not solid, peace in Korea will crumble. If there is a risk of North Korea's nuclear threat or the withdrawal of U.S. troops in terms of national defense and security, our country's economy cannot be sustained," Kim said.
Candidate Kim also mentioned that he was once an anti-American, saying, "There are still people like that (anti-American and anti-Japanese) among those who used to work in political movements with me in our society.
"Such things are expressed politically, but it is difficult to understand from abroad," he said, expressing concern. "There are many people who call me a 'traitor,' but I am the one who betrayed others.
It is socialism or communism, not the Republic of Korea."
