SK Telecom to introduce USIM format in mid-next month in response to tight inventory

South Korean telecommunications giant SK Telecom announced on the 29th that it was conducting a cyberattack in response to a leak of customer USIM (a chip-type IC card that records subscriber contract information such as phone numbers) information.
In relation to the free USIM card replacement program, Huawei has announced that it will introduce a "formatting" method to initialize USIM cards from mid-next month to alleviate stock shortages and ease user inconvenience.
According to the company, in order to alleviate the shortage of USIM cards and the inconvenience to overseas roaming users, the network infrastructure center is taking the lead in developing the software.
The company is developing a hardware USIM format technology that it claims will reduce the burden on users associated with USIM card replacement while ensuring the same level of security as a physical USIM card replacement.
However, to apply the USIM format, users must visit a store and link the system. Following the recent USIM information leak, the company is offering free replacements.
However, customer dissatisfaction has been growing due to long waiting times at stores and problems with the online reservation system. In particular, the current USIM inventory is only about 1 million units this month and 5 million units next month.
This is far from enough to replace the approximately 25 million subscribers, including those of its low-cost mobile phone companies. The company also said, "USIM inventory is insufficient compared to demand, and the exchange process takes time, so the number of exchanges per day is limited.
The company is aware of the current situation, saying, "There is a limit to the number of users." The company plans to provide USIM protection services when roaming overseas from the middle of next month. As of the 29th, the number of subscribers to this service was 10 million.
The number of subscribers is expected to exceed 10 million by early next month, and is expected to reach 15 million. On the 29th, 1.5 million new subscribers to the service, including 50,000 low-cost mobile phone users using SK Telecom lines, signed up.
The company says it will provide 100% compensation if any damage occurs after subscribing to the USIM protection service.
