South Korean government expresses ”deep disappointment and regret” over Prime Minister Kishida's ”dedication” to Yasukuni Shrine = South Korean media
On the 21st, the South Korean government expressed "deep disappointment" at the fact that Japanese political leaders, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, have glorified Japan's past wars of aggression and made offerings and visited the Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines war criminals.
On the 21st, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement by a spokesperson, "The government hopes that responsible Japanese leaders will squarely face history and act with humility and sincere reflection on history."
"I call on Japan to demonstrate this," he said, adding, "I would like to reiterate that this will be an important foundation for the future-oriented development of Japan-Korea relations."
According to Kyodo News, Prime Minister Kishida paid a visit to Yasukuni Shrine to coincide with the spring festival, which began on the same day.
A sacred sakaki tree was donated to the shrine in the name of "Prime Minister Kishida Fumio." Since taking office in 2021, Prime Minister Kishida has not visited Yasukuni Shrine in person, but has made offerings there.
Meanwhile, Japanese cabinet members paid personal visits to Yasukuni Shrine to coincide with the annual festival.
