Is "20s bride" already a thing of the past? There are more brides in their early 40s than those in their early 20s = South Korea
In South Korea last year, it was found that the number of brides in their early 40s exceeded the number of brides in their early 20s.

Factors such as "changes in demographic structure" in which the population in their 20s is declining and "changes in values" regarding marriage are thought to be factors.

According to the Korea Statistics Office's National Statistics Portal (KOSIS) on March 20th, the number of marriages among women in their early 40s (ages 40-44) was 10,949 last year. It was more than 10,113 cases. The number of marriages for women in their early 40s has been higher than that for women in their early 20s for the second consecutive year, from 2021 to 2022.

Compared to 25 years ago in 1997 (388,960), the total number of marriages last year was 191,690, down 51%. The number of marriages among women in their early 20s fell by 93% over the same period, from 136,918 to 10,113.

Meanwhile, the number of marriages among women in their early 40s increased by 50% from 7,322 to 10,949 over the same period. In particular, the number of first marriages among women in their 40s increased from 1,484 in 1997 to 5,835 last year, a 3.9-fold increase.

While the number of marriages among women in their early 20s has decreased in this way, one of the reasons for the increase in the number of marriages among women in their 40s is the "change in demographic structure," in which the population of women in their 20s is declining.

In addition, it is analyzed that "changes in values" regarding marriage are also having an impact.

According to a social survey last year by the National Statistics Office, 35.1% of people in their 20s said they should get married, the lowest rate among all age groups except teens (29.1%). On the other hand, 42.3% were in their 40s.

On the other hand, the ratio of couples in which the woman is 'older' has reached a record high since the relevant statistics began to be collected.
