"Cried over whether to buy 4,500-won Bento"… 20k civil servants escaping from underpaid = Korea
"I'm a civil servant. I work for the post office. After thinking about the 4,000 won lunch box on the way home from work and the 4,500 won lunch box that looks a little better, I bought the 4,000 won lunch box and left the store. I cried when I thought it was something people would buy. My bankbook records a monthly salary of 1.58 million won(about US$1,100)"

This is a post posted on an online community. Young people are turning a blind eye to civil service society. At one time, it was the top job among young people because of its high job stability, but recently it has been pushed weakly by big companies. for low rewards. Those who have finally broken through the door of competition also leave. About 20,000 civil servants will voluntarily retire in 2021.

According to the "Current Status of Dismissed National Civil Servants of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security" which was submitted to the House of Representatives of the People's Power (ruling party) by Jung Woo-taek on March 18th, the number of lawmakers who have been dismissed from office in 2021 increased from 10,694 in 2018. The number increased by 33.8% to 14,312. Dismissal of parliament means voluntary resignation. The same is true for local civil servants. During the same period, the number of lawmakers dismissed from office jumped 44% from 3,610 to 5,202. In 2021, the number of national and local civil servants who retired will reach 19,514.

The MZ generation (born between 1980 and 2004) appears to be the driving force behind the upward trend toward voluntary retirement. According to the Public Employee Pension Service, the number of retirees in less than three years of employment nearly doubled from 5,166 in 2018 to 9,881 in 2021. The number of low-ranking officials who left the civil service in four years alone reached 29,636.

Why? The industry cite low pay as the biggest reason. A source from the National Public Servants Union said, "In 2018, dissatisfaction was high due to terrible complaints, but recently, dissatisfaction with salary benefits is the highest. If you leave like that, it will have a considerable impact on the other members of the organization."

In fact, in a recent survey of 125 8th and 9th grade civil servants by the Jongno-gu Branch of the National Civil Servants' Labor Union Seoul, dissatisfaction with remuneration and benefits was the highest at 77.9% (repeating possible). Next, the type of work and amount of work (50.4%), working environment such as office/welfare (41.6%), power harassment/sexual harassment (13.3%), and relationships with employees/bosses (12.4%) were cited. According to the Personnel Innovation Department of the Ministry of Public Administration and Safety, the monthly salary for civil servants in 2023 will be 1,700,800 won for grade 9, 1,805,100 won for grade 8, and 1,805,100 won for grade 7. It was 1,962,300 won.

Under these circumstances, the number of people who challenge civil servants is decreasing. In 2023, 121,526 people applied for the 9th grade national civil service open competitive recruitment exam, down about 40,000 from the previous year. Considering that the number of applicants in 2017 reached 228,368, it has plummeted by 46.8% in six years. Effectively half. The situation is the same for Grade 7 national civil servants. The number of applications received was 33,455 last year, down 30.8% from 48,361 in 2017.
