Biden Officially Asks Yoon to Hold a “Democracy Summit”
South Korea's presidential office said, "President Yoon Seo-gyul received an invitation from US President Joe Biden to host one of the plenary sessions of the 2nd Democracy Summit." This was announced today through a press release.

In a letter of invitation released on March 12th, President Biden told President Yoon, "We are at an inflection point in history. The decisions that we democracies make now will affect the whole world for decades to come. We will decide the direction to take," he said, adding, "I hope that you will cooperate with President Yoon, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and Zambia in co-hosting the 2nd Democracy Summit in March."

"This summit will bring together leaders from all over the world to show and discuss how democracy can continue to serve all," he added.

"President Yoon has provided close and unremitting cooperation so far and helped make this summit a success," he said. "Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude for the hosting of a regional ministerial conference on March 30th, 2023, attended by representatives of governments, civil society and the private sector", he continued.

"President Yoon will preside over one of the five sessions at the summit's plenary session on March 29th, announcing the start of the summit and promoting candid dialogue on the power and potential of democracy around the world. I ask that you please do so," he said, adding, "I will share more details with the South Korean side in the near future."

"Co-hosting this summit reinforces the truth that 'democracy is our shared aspiration and responsibility,' and this is what we all need to defend," said President Biden. After that, I hope that we will continue to work together with President Yoon to promote human dignity, demonstrate human potential, and achieve peace and prosperity for all of us."

He added, "There is nothing that we cannot achieve if we work together as a democratic nation."

The Democracy Summit will be established in December 2021 under the leadership of the United States as the next former in response to the global decline in democracy. South Korea plans to co-host the 2nd Democracy Summit from 29-30 this month.
