Chinese state media: Western Ukraine 'tank support' makes war more 'quagmire'
China's official media criticized the decision by the United States, Germany, and other countries to "provide tanks" to Ukraine, saying that it would "promote the Ukrainian war to last even longer."

China's state-run English-language newspaper Global Times said in an online article dated January 26th that Western leaders' decision to supply tanks to Ukraine "would further exacerbate the already complicated conflict between Russia and Ukraine."

It goes on to say that it is not clear how the provision of tanks "will contribute to the militant improvement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but it will undoubtedly bog Russia and Ukraine and make the end of this conflict even more distant."

In addition, tanks provided by the United States and others may not perform as expected on the battlefield."

The Global Times quoted an unnamed military source as saying, "Ukraine uses weapons and equipment with ad hoc support from various countries, but faces problems of inadequate training and logistical support."

"The tanks provided by the United States and Germany to Ukraine are heavy main battle tanks, so they are easier to operate in winter, but less powerful in spring and summer when the roads are muddy" they added.

In an interview with the Global Times, Professor Li Haidong of the Chinese Academy of Foreign Studies said, "Currently, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is mainly taking place on land, so the main achievements on the battlefield mainly depend on the difference in weapons and the level and ability of soldiers. The United States and Germany hope to improve Ukraine's combat power by providing it with main battle tanks, but Russia has strong ground combat capabilities."
