<Itaewon accident> Police investigate 34 cases of secondary online abuse
South Korean police have reportedly uncovered a total of 34 cases of illegal acts, including malicious slander and personal information leaks, in connection with secondary online assaults related to the Itaewon disaster, announced on December 2nd.

Currently, seven cases have been sent to the prosecution in relation to the investigation into the secondary perpetration, seven cases are under investigation, and 20 cases are at the investigation (internal investigation) stage before the charges are filed.

Subsequently, the police detected, deleted, and blocked a total of 536 cases, including the distribution of malicious slanderous texts, the distribution of provocative photos and videos, and postings related to the leak of personal information.

After the accident, the police operated a casualty family support coordination team from the beginning of the accident to support the bereaved families. A total of 1,167 cases were supported by 238 specialized police officers in cooperation with local governments and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, including providing psychological first aid, distributing leftover items, and linking psychological treatment.

In addition, police officers in charge of 33 seriously injured people were designated, and measures were taken to coordinate support for treatment costs and to provide psychological support to the injured persons and their families.

In particular, the police operated the Itaewon Lost and Found Center from October 31st to November 13th to prevent theft and corruption. Currently, 443 of the 1,410 items lost at the site have been returned and the remaining 967 items are in storage.

It also manages the 'trauma' of police officers on the scene due to accidents. Of the 1,371 police officers dispatched to the scene, all 278 who requested emergency psychological support completed psychological counseling. In particular, considering the psychological pressure of the Yongsan police station, which has jurisdiction over the scene, five professional counselors were permanently stationed, and by the 1st of this month, psychological counseling was completed for 25 people.

In the wake of the Itaewon disaster, the police launched the "Police Innovation Task Force (TF)" to prepare fundamental improvement measures for the overall police system related to risk prevention, and outside experts and on-site police officers. participated in preparations for innovation measures. The TF plans to finalize detailed promotional tasks by the 15th and announce them by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the government ended the operation of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters for the 'Itaewon disaster' at 7:00 pm that day.
