"Hate the fear of pregnancy"... Italian influencer in 20s chose "fallopian tube removal" = Korean coverage
In Italy, where low birth rates is a social problem, a woman in her 20s who is an influencer with tens of thousands of followers has revealed that she has undergone surgery to prevent pregnancy, causing controversy.

According to Italian media Al Gazzettino on November 14th (local time), Francesca (28), said in an interview that she underwent bilateral salpingectomy at a hospital in Verona 5 years ago.

Francesca had her fallopian tubes removed at a young age to eliminate the possibility of natural conception. "Birth control devices weren't enough," she said. "I never felt calm or free (with contraceptives)", she continued. "Children are not accessories. They need love, time and focus. There was no place for them in the life I wanted. I know I'm selfish, but I believe every woman has the right to choose the life that's right for her."

Francesca is a fitness instructor who posts videos on social media about exercise, diet management, and mental and physical health with 45,000 followers.

Currently, the average birth rate per woman in Italy is 1.24 (as of 2020). Among 38 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries, it is the second lowest after South Korea. South Korea's total birth rate in 2021 is 0.81.

When Francesca's interview article was published, her SNS was criticized one after another. Local media reported that there were many insulting sentences asking whether they would undergo surgery to have sexual relations freely.

"I take responsibility for all my decisions," Francesca said.

Meanwhile, Francesca's surgery was made famous by Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. Angie had her breasts and fallopian tubes removed after genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer. However, while Angie is for ovarian cancer prevention, Francesca is in a different situation.
