UN Secretary-General: Annexation referendum on Russian occupied territories 'No legal effect'
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly criticized Russia's forced referendum to annex occupied territories in Ukraine.

At a press conference held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on September 29th (local time), Secretary-General Guterres said, "Any decision made on the territory of Ukraine through the vote will have no legal effect and should not be criticized. It's only natural to receive it," adding, "I absolutely cannot forgive it."

He continued by saying, "It is a violation of the UN Charter and international law to annex another country's territory by force or threat."

Russia has held referendums for five days in four provinces, including Luhansk and Donetsk, from September 23rd.

Mr Guterres also said Russia's preparations to declare annexation of four regions of Ukraine were "an action that heightens the crisis" and "is unacceptable in the modern international community".
