IAEA's plan to establish 'safe zone' for Zaporizhia nuclear power plant... Korea also expresses its support
The United States, the European Union (EU), South Korea, and others have expressed support for the plan to establish a "demilitarized safe zone" around Ukraine's Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, where concerns over the release of radioactive materials due to the war in Ukraine have increased.

According to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) on September 23rd (local time), a meeting of high-level representatives of countries expressing concern over the safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was held in New York, the day before the United Nations General Assembly was held. Representatives from major countries such as the United States and the European Union attended, and French President Emmanuel Macron presided over the meeting.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who attended the meeting, introduced the activities of the IAEA mission stationed at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant and explained, "We are promoting the plan to establish a demilitarized safe zone around the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant."

President Macron said, "The IAEA's proposal has received widespread support at the UN General Assembly", adding, "I am confident that the plan to establish a safe zone will soon become a reality."

At this meeting, a statement was adopted in support of the "Proposal for the establishment of a safe zone for the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant". The statement was attended by the United States, the EU, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Ukraine, as well as South Korea.

However, if a safe zone is to be set up at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the consent of the parties concerned must be obtained, but Russia has yet to provide a concrete response.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, has been under the control of Russia since the beginning of March this year after it invaded Ukraine, and the practical operation of the nuclear power plant is being carried out by the Ukrainian state-owned company "Energoatom".

According to the IAEA, Director-General Grossi met separately with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleva in New York during the UN General Assembly to discuss the issue of establishing a safe zone.
